Garbage Disposal Installation and Repair

Many homes built in the last 50+ years have garbage disposals made by companies like InSinkErator®, Waste King®, GE®, and KitchenAid®. If used properly (see below), in-sink garbage disposals typically have a long lifespan with few problems. From time to time, it's normal that your in-sink garbage disposal may get clogged, stop working, or make strange noises. The plumbing experts at Edwards & Mills, Inc., will help you diagnose any issues you're having with your disposal, then fix the problem or, if necessary, remove your old garbage disposal and recommend a replacement.

If you need to install a new garbage disposal—or you'd like to add one to a sink that doesn't already have one—we can help with that, too. While there is some debate about the environmental impacts of garbage disposals—and certainly composting food waste is the best environmental solution—most sources say that garbage disposals are a good waste management tool that reduces the amount of food waste sent to landfills. When you put fruit peels, rinds, old bread, and the remains of meals in your disposal, the machine grinds the food up into tiny particles, which get washed down the drain with water. Most municipal water systems are able to recycle finely ground food waste, and some even trap the methane that's generated by decomposing food and turn it into energy.

Garbage Disposal Installation

If you're remodeling your kitchen (or just adding a new kitchen sink) and you want to add a new garbage disposal, don't try to do it yourself. In many cases, garbage disposal removal and installation is a two-person job, and improper water line connection and placement can cause big problems. Plus, garbage disposals require both water sources and an electricity supply—it's best to let the pros handle it when there's a potential to mix water and electricity!

If you need advice on what type, size, and horsepower garbage disposal to choose, we will give you our best advice based on your household size, sink construction, and budget. Then, we'll install your new disposal properly according to manufacturer recommendations and our own experience, test it to make sure everything is working correctly, and leave you with instructions on how to use and maintain the new disposal.

Garbage Disposal Repair

Some estimates say that at least 50% of U.S. households have garbage disposals; many people are quite accustomed to scraping dinner plates and other food waste off into the sink rather than putting it into the trashcan. With as much use as most garbage disposals get, it's no surprise that many of us have faced a clogged garbage disposal, a garbage disposal that won't run or makes humming noises without grinding up any food, an under-sink leak caused by the garbage disposal, or other garbage disposal problems.

If you're having issues with your garbage disposal, please give Edwards & Mills, Inc., a call today. We'll help you quickly and professionally, so your garbage disposal will be up and running again, problem-free.

How to Use an In-Sink Garbage Disposal Properly

  • Always run cold water before, during, and after using the garbage disposal.
  • NEVER use hot water…it can cause the motor to over-heat.
  • Don't put things like celery, corn husks, or other stringy materials into standard disposals (there are some larger, more powerful models that can handle these wastes, but most do not).
  • Don't put fat or grease into the disposal.
  • From time to time, put disposal cleaner or citrus peels along with several cubes of ice into the disposal and run it. The ice will help scour the grinding chamber clean, and the cleaner/citrus will deodorize the disposal.
  • If you have a septic system, don't put shellfish into the disposal.
  • NEVER reach into the disposal when it's in use. If you need to reach into the disposal for any reason, be sure power to the unit is turned OFF.
